Robert Tewsley was born in Leicester, England and studied at The Royal Ballet School in London. From 1990 to 1996, he danced with the National Ballet of Canada, where he achieved the rank of Principal Dancer. In 1996 Mr. Tewsley joined Stuttgart Ballet as a Principal Dancer, and in the fall of 2002 he joined The Royal Ballet as a Principal Dancer. During November of 2002 Robert Tewsley joined New York City Ballet as well as a Principal Dancer.
Mr. Tewsley is now a freelance dancer, making frequent and regular appearances around the world, including companies of international prestige as New York City Ballet, Jeoffry Ballet, Chicago, Stuttgart Ballet, Staatsballett Berlin, Hamburg Ballet, Vienna State Opera, The Royal Ballet, The English National Ballet, La Scalla de Milan, Teatro San Carlo di Napole, The National Ballet of Canada, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and diverse companies in South America, Japan, and Russia among others.
Most recently Robert Tewsley has originated a role in “Penelope”, a pas de deux created by
Stuttgart Ballet’s resident Choreographer Christian Spuck in collaboration for the German and French television channel ARTE.
Whilst in the Stuttgart Ballet, Robert Tewsley was elected “Dancer of the Year 2002” by the European dance magazine “Dance Europe” During his outstanding career he has been nominated twice for the prestigious “Benois de la Dance Prize” for his interpretations of Albrecht in "Giselle" and "Apollo".
